OBVARA

Obvara is a 12th Century raku firing technique using only fermented flour, water, milk or beer. It was developed in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe (Latvia, Lithuania, Ukrainia, Belarus) when a vessel was probably standing by a fire and then rolled into a slops bucket containing fermented waste. It is credited with having properties which help preserve food from insects and to keep food cooked in an obvara pot warmer and also cooler. Sometimes, if you are very lucky, the flour burns into the pot during the process and creates the elusive "obvara “eyes” which are said to have mystical properties. It’s a fun firing technique and, because it uses totally non-toxic materials and the results are immediate, is great to try at workshops or at school classes. Jacqui is delighted to facilitate obvara workshops and is a qualified Secondary School Teacher. She fires her obvara kiln at least every couple of weeks, so there is always something new for sale. Please contact for more. For a great little video of the technique, click here.
